FCC Grants XM Extension to Drift XM-1 Satellite in Position

Today, the FCC granted XM authority to extend the time to drift the XM-1 satellite into position after commencing operation of XM-4. The extension was needed to avoid drifting the satellite during the eclipse season (February 26 to April 13). The current grant expires on May 08, 2007. Due to the late approval, it is unknown what XM decided to do. They may have been forced to drift the satellite during the eclipse season, endangering other satellites. Perhaps they took a chance and delayed the drift in hopes that they would eventually receive the grant. Such as to what the approval process has come to for satellite radio.
