NAB Demands Recall of Non-Compliant Radios


Today, the National Association of Broadcasts (NAB) demanded a recall of non-compliant radios. See the full letter here. Previously, NAB tested several satellite radios and FM modulators and found most of them out of compliance. Sirius (SIRI) had two radios on the list: the S50 and the Sportster Replay, both of which were well over the limit. XM (XMSR) had one wired FM modulator on the list, which was in compliance. NAB is also using it's political muscle.

Sirius' biggest problem might be the FMOut signal. Sirius continues to use a standard jack even with its latest StarMate. The FCC does not permit the use of a standard jack for the transmission of the FM signal. Users are already discovering ways to circumvent weak FM transmitters. Some are modifying their radio such that they can transmit for blocks or even miles, effectively becoming broadcasters. Many Stern fans are evangelists and want to get the word out or be as disruptive as possible. This is the source of many complaints. In addition, Sirius recently filed a report with the SEC stating that they intentionally modified their receivers to broadcast strong FM signals than allowed.

Although Sirius was the likely cause of the recent FCC investigation, XM was the first one hit by it. XM's problem resulted by failing to use the proper test procedure. XM uses a different technique that requires a different testing procedure, which they were unaware. XM made minor changes to their radio and had them re-certified by a different testing firm. The FCC eventually dismissed the re-certifications after performing their own tests. Their testing procedure was apparently different from the testing firm's procedure. Both Sirius and XM are now working with the FCC to understand how the FCC will test the radios that use the vehicle wiring as a radiator.

XM Patent Application: Automatic on/off switch for vehicle power outlets

On July 27, 2006, XM Satellite Radio had a patent application published for a switch to turn a satellite radio off when the ignition turns off for cigarette lighters that do not power off when the key is in the off position. Here is the abstract:

A vehicle power outlet switch (10) can include a threshold detector (14) for comparing a predetermined threshold with a vehicle battery characteristic and a power switch (18) controlled by the output of the threshold detector. Note, the vehicle battery characteristic differs while the vehicle engine is turned on or turned off and the threshold detector provides an enabling signal to the power switch when the vehicle engine is detected as being on. The threshold detector can also provide a disabling signal to the power switch when the vehicle engine is off. The power outlet switch can further include a timer (16) coupled to an output of the threshold detector that continues to provide an enabling signal to the power switch for a predetermined time after the threshold detector detects that the vehicle engine is turned off. The timer can include or be a one shot timer.

New Sirius StarMate et al


On July 07, 2006, Wistron Neweb Corporation (WNC) received certification for a new StarMate model (FCC ID NKRUPAST205). The radio is essentially the same as the previous StarMate, except for they have eliminated the internal FM Loop antenna. Presumably, they will use the same technique as XM on its most recent satellite radios, utilizing a leaky coax antenna cable to transmit the signal and perhaps the power wiring as well. Evidently, this technique produces superior results. The new Sportster 4 continues to use the internal loop antenna. The performance of the FM modulator has been widely criticized as weak. Many of the previous Sirius radios have been well over the limit. The technique used with the StarMate is an apparent attempt to overcome the shortcomings of the Sportster 4. The Sportster 4 is manufactured by Ki Ryung, while the StarMate is manufactured by WNC.

XM has been recently challenged by the FCC by how they were testing their satellite radios. Essentially, the new radios use the vehicle wiring as a radiator. This requires a different testing procedure. The FCC recently clarified this to XM. Since the vehicle wiring can't be defined, in situ testing is require is three representative installations: a small, medium, and large car. Reading the test report on the new StarMate, it appears that WNC did not follow the proper procedure either.

The new StarMate (or at least the same electronics) will be sold under six brand names:
  • Sirius (ST2)
  • WNC (UPA-ST2)
  • Radio Shack (ST2R)
  • Brix (SIR-GTR1)
  • AudioVox (SIR-PNP5)
  • USE a.k.a. XAct (XTR8)
The SIR-PNP series for AudioVox was previously built by Ki Ryung. It now appears that it will be built by WNC. The is true for XAct's XTR series (the Visor). It appears that WNC is pretty much taking over the manufacture of Sirius' satellite radio receivers. It is rumored that WNC will build Sirius' wearable, the Stiletto.

Sea Launch Applies for Experimental License to Test XM-4 before Sailing to Launch Site

On July 20, Sea Launch applied for an experimental license to test XM Satellite Radio's XM-4 prior to sailing to the equatorial launch site. This is a precursor to the launch of XM-4, so we now know that the launch is getting close. Sea Launch has confirmed that the next launch will be the Korea Sat 5, to be followed by XM-4. Korea Sat 5 is planned for launch in August. This is one of three remaining launches for the year. The application has not been approved.
